Understanding Solid Wood
Understanding the basic properties of wood is essential to proper maintenance and expectations associated with the ownership of solid wood countertops and furniture. Wood is a natural organic material with properties including: density, strength, grain pattern, moisture content, workability, natural durability, aesthetic appeal, and varying levels of hardness depending on the wood species; making it versatile for construction, furniture making, and other applications, with key factors like its cellular structure and composition of cellulose fibers contributing to its unique characteristics.
Density & Hardness
Certain hardwood species are denser than others—this hardness aids in the ability to resist scratches and dents. A hard scratch-resistant coating is only as strong as the wood underneath supporting it. Wood is not stone or engineered material; it can develop scratches and dents. JP Senior Wood Works does not guarantee that our countertops and furniture will remain free of scratches and dents.
Grain Pattern & Color
Grain pattern refers to the visible arrangement of wood fibers and surface texture. We believe in letting the natural grain show through stained countertops and furniture. Because every board absorbs stain differently, uniform color cannot be guaranteed. Hand-stained pieces will exhibit natural contrast and variation. No two pieces of wood are identical, and we do not guarantee color matches to samples or photographs.
Moisture Content & Humidity
Moisture content affects wood movement. For most interior projects, 6%–8% moisture content is ideal before finishing. After delivery or installation, wood acclimates to each customer’s environment. Humidity below or above 50%–55% may cause swelling, shrinkage, checking, or cracks. We recommend maintaining indoor humidity around 50%–55%, especially in winter. JP Senior Wood Works does not guarantee that built-ins, countertops, or furniture will not swell, shrink, or develop checking and cracks.
Handcrafted Variations
Handcrafted furniture and built-ins are one-of-a-kind. Photos are provided for reference, but due to the natural differences in wood, we do not guarantee a perfect match to any pictured item.
